Emerald Ash Borer Expert Tells Illinois Cities Time Is Short To Avoid Spending Millions

PR Log - Oct 25, 2012 - (Woburn, MA) – Arborist and emerald ash borer (EAB) expert Jeff Palmer keynoted a panel discussion on EAB management strategies for an audience of Illinois municipal government leaders. In his presentation Mr. Palmer compared financial cost of the most common management options over a twenty year period. The integrated management plan which provides for the preservation of desirable ash trees and the removal of undesirable ash trees was significantly less expensive than a “removal” management plan when evaluated over a twenty year period.

“The City of Chicago’s plan to treat trees every three years clearly demonstrates the financial flexibility that treatment offers local governments,” stated Jeff Palmer. “Costs are distributed over decades instead of years, and communities preserve the benefits of mature trees which include a positive contribution to home values.”

Mr. Palmer, who consults on EAB to municipalities in five Midwestern states, said municipalities that employ a “removal” approach do so by default and without the benefit of scientific studies and economic calculators that is readily available. “In difficult economic times no one wants to ask for money,” Palmer added. “But in the same vein, why would a city choose a path where the money they need to ask for is five to ten times what is necessary? Choosing to not treat is a choice to spend more.”

A panel discussion followed Mr. Palmer’s presentation. Mayor Chris Canning of Wilmette, the first municipality in Illinois to combat EAB and Dru Sabatello, head Arborist of Arlington Heights participated on the panel. Mayor Arlene Mulder of Arlington Heights which in 2012 bonded $11 million for ash tree removal and replacement moderated the question and answer session.
