It’s a Christmas gift that will bring joy long past the holiday season.

Holman’s USA, a national firm with deep Albuquerque roots, has donated 24 Apple iPads to four APS classrooms – and in the process is opening the door to a brighter future for children with autism.

Holman’s donation to autism teachers at Pajarito, McCollum, Mark Twain and Petroglyph elementary schools will help speed the learning and development of children who are greatly helped by the technology.

This week, Holman’s President Anthony D. Trujillo delivered the donations to teachers Peggy Hulick (Petroglyph), Heather Diluzio (Pajarito), Cristal Wilson (Mark Twain) and Ritamarie Theiler (McCollum).

In every case, the teachers beamed – or cried tears of joy.

“What Anthony and Holman’s USA are doing is almost indescribable,” said Phill Casaus, head of the APS Education Foundation. “Teachers rave about the effectiveness of the iPads for children with autism – they say it makes a difference. Anthony is responding to that, and making a day-after-day contribution to the betterment of APS students.”

Holman’s was founded in 1955 by E.S. Holman of Albuquerque serving primarily as a map and drafting supply store. As needs advanced and the technology evolved, Holman’s expanded its focus to include high-tech computing and automated Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) systems along with advanced survey solutions including Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system solutions.

Under the leadership of the Trujillo family, which has owned the company for decades, the company has diversified and began transitioning to Holman’s USA, LLC in January 2010. Holman’s is now a national business. In addition to its headquarters in Albuquerque, the company has offices in Tempe, Ariz.; Golden, Colo.; Livermore, Calif.; Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and Los Alamos.

Holman’s USA’s commitment to education in Albuquerque is nothing new – the company has supported Albuquerque Public Schools initiatives on many fronts. But Trujillo, a graduate of Eldorado High School and the UNM Anderson School of Management, said his company is concentrating its giving toward helping teachers in autism classrooms. The company holds a benefit golf tournament to help raise money for the effort.

“It’s an honor to give back to our local communities regionally and nationally. Helping these wonderful teachers and students in APS is very rewarding,” Trujillo said. “I want to recognize our customers and key sponsors for making this initiative an ongoing success. Holman’s will continue providing technology for autism and our legacy of giving back to the community. These teachers are incredible and we will do everything possible to help them in support of autistic students making strides toward inclusion in mainstream classrooms.”
