Amazon Web Services Receives Department of Defense-Wide Provisional Authorization for All U.S. Regions

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ: AMZN), today announced that all four of AWS’s infrastructure Regions in the U.S., including AWS GovCloud (U.S.), have received a Department of Defense (DoD) Provisional Authorization under the DoD Cloud Security Model (CSM) for Impact Levels 1-2. With this distinction, AWS has shown it can meet the DoD’s stringent security and compliance requirements; and as a result, even more DoD agencies can now use AWS’s secure, compliant infrastructure. “After receiving an overwhelming response from defense agencies interested in leveraging our FedRAMP Authority to Operate (ATO), we’re very excited to further extend our services to the government community by meeting the additional requirements of the DoD,” said Teresa Carlson, Vice President Worldwide Public Sector, AWS. “Today, more than 600 government agencies use AWS services, and we look forward to continuing to demonstrate the security and reliability of the AWS Cloud so that an even broader set of DoD customers can use our services to reduce costs and innovate for their missions.”

Built on the foundation of the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), which provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services across the federal government, the DoD CSM includes additional security controls specific to the DoD. The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) assessed AWS’s compliance with those additional security controls and approved AWS cloud computing services, reducing the time necessary for DoD agencies to evaluate and authorize the use of the AWS Cloud. While numerous DoD agencies, including the U.S. Department of the Navy and the U.S. Air Force, already leverage AWS services to reduce costs and drive efficiencies, the DoD Provisional Authorization makes it even easier for agencies to use AWS for more workloads.

With today’s announcement, DoD agencies have an efficient way to run their applications on AWS. AWS services are listed in the DoD Enterprise Cloud Service Broker (ECSB) catalog, and DoD agencies can immediately request AWS DoD Provisional Authorization compliance support by submitting a Compliance Support Request to the AWS public sector sales and business development team.
