GlobalMed Video Blog Targets Telemedicine, Challenges Faced by the Medical Community

The clapboard sound synchronizes the audio in two video cameras, signaling the start of another video piece. GlobalMed Founder and CEO Joel E. Barthelemy waits for the cue to begin his 40th video blog. This time the topic is “Connecting Veterans with Telehealth.” When he hears “Action!” he begins: “There is no other way to say it. The VA Healthcare System has a lot of problems that must be fixed.” Both the blog videos and written blog articles are posted on the GlobalMed Web site, www.globalmed.com, on the “Telemedicine Blog” page.

After GlobalMed purchased a second, 48,000-square-foot building in the Scottsdale, Arizona Airpark, the company remodeled a 45-by-43-foot space in the rear, installed a Pro-Cyc green screen and acquired professional video equipment. Video shot in the studio helps promote company products, educates healthcare providers and the public about telemedicine, and trains clients.

Barthelemy is standing a dozen feet away from an L-shaped green screen that measures 16 feet along one wall and 23 feet along another, and extends 12 feet high. “In 2013, more than 600 thousand veteran patients participated in one-point-seven million telehealth episodes of care,” Barthelemy says. “A key component of the program is Clinical Video Telehealth, which includes real-time video consultation covering more than 44 clinical specialties.” At the end of the three minute and 48 second piece, he asks his audience to send their thoughts to his email address, joelsblog@globalmed.com.

“Typically, the main stream media spend only a little time on positive news in so-called ‘feature stories,’ usually near the end of newscasts,” said Barthelemy. “There are a lot of caring people who work at the VA who are dedicated to providing veterans with quality healthcare and improving outcomes, but you wouldn’t know it from the coverage.”
