Millions Of Americans Affected By Sleep Disorders

Chiang Mai, Thailand - November 19, 2014 /PressCable/

November 19, 2014 – According to the National Center on Sleep Disorder Research, “at least 40 million Americans suffer from chronic, long-term sleep disorders, and another 20 to 30 million experience occasional sleep problems.” We’re looking at roughly 60 to 70 million of the population suffering from these sleeping problems. Occasional or not, they result to huge numbers that are logical causes of concern, considering the adverse effect that they bring to one’s overall health and productivity, particularlyin the workplace.

The most common and well-known sleep disorders are Sleep Apnea and Insomnia. Sleep apnea, or having interrupted breathing during sleep, affects more than 18 million American adults, as shown in studies conducted by the National Sleep Foundation. On the other hand, insomnia, or the inability to falland/or stay asleep, is experienced by approximately 60 million Americans in a year.

Other types of sleep disorders that plague millions of Americans today include narcolepsy (extreme or excessive and uncontrollable sleepiness during the day), Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS (the irresistible compulsion to move one’s arms and legs), sleepwalking, Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, and sleep paralysis, to name a few. Research shows that narcolepsy affects an estimated 250,000 Americans, while RLS is diagnosed in almost 12 million.

Treatment of these different types of sleep disorders have taken on a more serious route in recent years. The usual treatments, such as undergoing therapies and taking specific medications, are still observed. Patients are advised to reevaluate their lifestyles and make the necessary changes in order to overcome the symptoms of these disorders and be rid of them permanently.

But not everyone is responsive to the usual treatments. As a result, it is not strange to find more than a few of them looking for an innovative sleep remedy that, while they may not cure the disorder entirely, will alleviate the symptoms.

One such innovative remedy is a cooling pillow, which is useful in preventing hot flashes or uncomfortably high temperature during sleep, a common symptom for insomnia. It works by regulating the body’s temperature, keeping it down and dispersing it so as to not interrupt one’s sleep or cause excessive sweating and discomfort.

The Polar Gel Pillow by New Home Innovations is one of the latest cooling pillows available today. It stands out for making use of the most recent advanced cooling gel technology, and since it comes in an extra-large size (it measures 12” x 22”) the area for heat dispersion is wider, unlike the size limitation that patients experience with regular cooling pillow pads.
