Chaffey Joint Union High School District, Constellation and PsomasFMG Dedicate 6.7-Megawatt Solar Generation Project

Chaffey Joint Union High School District (CJUHSD) today announced the completion of an aggregate 6.76-megawatt DC solar generation project. The system is designed to generate more than 11,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year and meet 46 percent of the electricity needs for the school district.

In honor of the solar project’s completion, a celebration and ribbon cutting were held today at Colony High School in Ontario, Calif. Representatives from CJUHSD, Constellation and PsomasFMG attended the event.

“The new solar power system will help the district to maintain stable electricity costs and serve as an educational resource for our students to learn about renewable energy,” said Mat Holton, superintendent of Chaffey Joint Union High School District. “It complements what we are currently doing in the areas conservation and will help us to save an estimated $40 million in energy costs over the next 25 years.”

The solar project required no upfront capital from the school district. Solar firm PsomasFMG worked with CJUHSD to develop the project. Energy products and services company Constellation financed the project’s development and will own and operate the system. CJUHSD will purchase the electricity generated by the system through a 25-year power purchase agreement with Constellation.

The solar power arrays are comprised of approximately 21,800 photovoltaic panels located on parking canopies at eight sites: Alta Loma High School, Chaffey High School, Colony High School, Etiwanda High School, Los Osos High School, Montclair High School, Ontario High School, and Rancho Cucamonga High School.

The system is expected to avoid the creation of 8,782 tons of carbon dioxide annually --- the equivalent emissions from 1,677 passenger vehicles, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data.
