The Bar Hops owner, William Batson walked away with top honors for his winning margarita recipe that he handcrafted and presented in a competition sponsored by Avion Tequila.

Coinciding with Cinco de Mayo, the margarita competition included 5 competing professional bartenders who created new tequila drink flavors for the judges to compare and taste test at the event held at Humphreys Downtown, a popular bar located in Huntsville.

This is Batson’s fourth win in a cocktail competition.

The art of mixing drinks has gained increased attention in and around the United States. Batson’s company, the Bar Hops, is known for creation of signature cocktails for weddings and events. The cocktails often feature unusual flavors and ingredients such as the smoked chili salt and grilled pineapple used in the winning margarita.

“I enter competitions like this to increase my skills and keep growing my knowledge.” said Batson. “It’s always a learning process when you develop a new recipe and that’s a good thing. It’s been my mission to increase interest and professionalism for bartenders in Alabama and for the bartending industry in general through sharing information and increasing opportunities for education.”

“Untrained bartenders with little or no training in the proper way to mix drinks and monitor consumption can potentially create unwanted problems for party hosts. That is why we focus on education to ensure our professional bartenders are the best in the business.” he continued.

William was one of the founders of the Birmingham Chapter of the United States Bartending Guild, a Master Accreditation Program for professional bartenders and became the first certified “Spirits Professional” in the State of Alabama.

Continuing education is offered to bar professionals through USBG Conferences and online. At a recent conference in Orlando, one such course by The Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT), a regulatory agency that monitors quality specifications and authentication of tequila in Mexico and abroad provided the opportunity to learn the history, properties and requirements for quality production of authentic Mexican tequila as well as earn CRT certification. Batson was the first to earn the CRT certification in Alabama.

Founded in 2010 his company, The Bar Hops, provides licensed, liquor liability insured and professionally trained bartenders for special event venues and weddings in and around Birmingham.

William Batson is the author of the book Classic Cocktails: For Classy People and Other Interesting Characters, a digital book that can be found on Amazon.
