Volkswagen Golf TDI Rounds Lower 48 States on Less than $300 of Diesel Fuel

Automotive journalist Wayne Gerdes, and co-driver Bob Winger, took a 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI on a 16 day adventure around the United States in June. The trip, which totaled 8,233.3 miles, was accomplished on only $294.98 worth of fuel. That means the turbodiesel powered Golf TDI achieved an average fuel economy of 81.17 miles per gallon during the trip. This achievement was recorded as the Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption for the 48 contiguous United States for a non-hybrid car.
This is not the first time that Wayne Gerdes and Volkswagen have achieved this record. Two years ago Gerdes drove a 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDi around the continental United States, and achieved a then-best 77.99 miles per gallon. The latest Golf TDI and Gerdes broke that record this year, with the attempt in the Golf TDI.
The Current 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI currently boasts EPA-estimates of 30 mpg city/45 mpg highway/36 mpg combined with the six-speed manual transmission, and 31 mpg city/36 mpg highway/43 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic transmission.
