From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of ginger. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced, except for 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013 when high import prices made this difference more pronounced.
The Netherlands and India were among the other main global suppliers of ginger in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Peru (+86% per year) and Indonesia (+63% per year). The Netherlands significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, China’s top 5 trading partners were the U.S., the Netherlands, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia, with a combined 62% share of China’s ginger exports. The share of the Netherlands increased significantly (+12 percentage points), while the share of Japan illustrated negative dynamics (-12 percentage points).
