Michigan Virtual Charter Academy Kicks Off 2017-2018 School Year

Students at Michigan Virtual Charter Academy (MVCA) will start the new school year on Sept. 5, simply by turning on their computers. An online public school for Michigan students in grades K-12, MVCA provides a tuition-free option for families across the state.

With a personalized approach to learning, MVCA gives students the chance to learn in ways that meet their needs. Students tackle a full course load in the core subjects of math, science, English/language arts and history. Lessons are integrated across the curriculum, so students may apply what they are learning in one class to the lessons they encounter in another.

Live, online classes are facilitated by Michigan-certified teachers, and students connect with their peers during live Class Connect sessions.

“Working with our students is truly special,” said instructional coach Casey Swan. “We get to know our families, and as an online school we are able to provide a level of support they might not get elsewhere.”

Students can approach MVCA’s rigorous curriculum at a pace that suits their needs, talents and interests. Advanced learners can move quickly through lessons and take on leadership opportunities during class, while those who struggle can get additional support from their teachers through regular emails, phone calls and one-to-one online meetings. Learning coaches – often parents or other relatives - work alongside students to ensure accountability and progress.

In addition to their virtual classes, MVCA students have access to materials such as books and materials for reading, experiments and other projects. Outside of class time, students participate in a variety of extracurricular clubs and activities, and meet in-person at teacher-led and school-sponsored events, field trips and social gatherings.

MVCA is still enrolling for the 2017-18 school year. For information on enrollment, visit http://mvca.k12.com/how-enroll.html. To connect with school leaders at an upcoming online or in-person information session, visit http://mvca.k12.com/events-calendar.html.
