Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc. (“ACS”) (NASDAQ:ALSK) today announced further expansion of its CDMA voice and data network across the North Slope.
The ACS wireless network on the North Slope already covers the most populated areas, extending from Deadhorse to Kuparuk and north to Oooguruk. ACS’ further expansion will provide enhanced service to Service City, the west side of the Prudhoe Bay field near the Kuparuk River, and the spine road linking many of the outlying fields.
“This is the fourth ACS CDMA site we have built in the area, which will bridge the two main North Slope fields, Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk,” said senior vice president of network and IT, Anand Vadapalli. “ACS is proud to support our partners in oil and gas exploration by providing the very best wireless voice and mobile broadband coverage on the North Slope.”
ACS customers throughout the North Slope can experience seamless voice coverage and a high-speed connectivity to the Internet from their portable computers as well as their CDMA EV-DO enabled Pocket PCs and handsets. ACS Mobile Broadband service reaches speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. No other wireless network in Alaska delivers service at that speed.
About the North Slope
The North Slope is the region of Alaska located on the northern slope of the Brooks Range along the coast of the Arctic Ocean. The region contains the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska, which contains the bulk of Alaska’s known petroleum reserves and is the base of several oil companies employing thousands of workers. The petroleum extracted from the region is transferred south by means of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System to Valdez on the Pacific Ocean.
