VetSource Selects Mule as Enterprise Service Bus for Web-Based Veterinary Pharmaceutical Business

MuleSource, the leading provider of open source service oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructure software, today announced that VetSource is serving veterinary customers in the United States and Canada on a new SOA-based Web platform with Mule as the enterprise service bus (ESB).

VetSource, first launched in 2007 after a merger between a pharmaceutical distribution company and a technology provider, uses a Web-based business model to put hospitals and clinics in control of the pet pharmaceutical supply chain. Clinics and customers benefit from increased choice, improved customer service, and lower costs while manufacturers benefit from better customer compliance with their vets scheduled dosage for medications.

VetSource looked to the power of SOA to automate the industrys antiquated supply chain, by integrating the buying engine and ERP system with hundreds of partner and manufacturer systems online all with different data formats and transport protocols. The system is designed to negotiate the complex pricing structure of a 30,000-product catalogue, flawlessly execute transactions with clinics and distributors, and comply with drug regulatory requirements in all 50 states and Canada.

It was really an easy decision to standardize on Mule, said Craig Sutter, technology director at VetSource. After doing a few prototypes, some taking only one or two days to complete, Mules flexibility and speed of development became apparent. And as a MuleSource customer, our developers dont have to struggle with finding answers on newsgroups and message boards.

Using Mule as the ESB in their SOA implementation gave VetSource critical flexibility, allowing decoupled services to communicate with each other and client interfaces. With a focus on simplicity and reusability, VetSource wrote new services as simple POJOs with RESTful APIs exposed through Mule. Other services were created reusing business logic embedded in a monolithic legacy application, helping the company reduce development costs and decrease their time to market. Batch services that are trigger or time based can take advantage of Mules transformers to generate output from disparate data sources into multiple data formats.

Integrating these services with Mule and exposing them in a RESTful manner allows VetSource the flexibility to leverage the same services with different interfaces. For example, each pet clinic on VetSource has a privately-branded application or interface but these are seamlessly integrated into the same back-end.

Using Mules open source and open standards-based architecture, VetSource is re-using existing legacy assets, helping them get to market quickly and giving them an edge over the competition, said Dave Rosenberg, co-founder and CEO of MuleSource. Were pleased to be a VetSource trusted technology partner, delivering them the enterprise-class software, technical support and services to help them confidently scale their infrastructure as their business grows.
