Macro International Inc. Awarded Maryland Youth and Adult Tobacco Surveys Contract

Macro was awarded a $3.5M contract to provide technical and logistical support for administration of the Maryland Youth and Adult Tobacco Surveys. Issued by Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), this contract will run through June 30, 2012 and cover the 2008 and 2010 administrations of the surveys.

DHMH is required by legislation to develop biennial estimates of the prevalence of tobacco-use behaviors and exposure to second-hand smoke for the State as a whole and for each of its 24 political subdivisions with respect to: (1) under-age youth; (2) under-age minority youth; (3) adults; (4) minority adults; and (5) pregnant women. The primary data sources for these studies are the Maryland Youth and Adult Tobacco Surveys, which are conducted in the fall of odd-numbered fiscal years. The resultant data are utilized by DHMH and local health departments and school systems to monitor changes over time and for program development and evaluation. A statutory formula uses survey data to allocate tobacco prevention and cessation funds to Maryland’s political jurisdictions. Previous reports and details on the methodologies used can be found at: http://www.fha.state.md.us/reports.cfm.

“Maryland has very strong traditions,” said Kate Flint, project director, “of generating data estimates at the local level, which corresponds politically to the catchment area for the school district and the local health department. So, data are analyzed not only statewide, but separately for each county and the City of Baltimore. This ensures the entire enterprise is valued at the local level.”

Macro has conducted the Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) and the Adult Tobacco Survey (ATS) for DHMH since their inceptions in fall 2000. Macro also has conducted the ATS for 15 other states or parts of states. Macro has conducted the YTS in 10 states. In addition, Macro has fielded the National YTS since its inception in 1999 and will be fielding the first National ATS in the latter half of 2009.
