Capella University Awards $50,000 in Scholarships to Injured Service Members

In honor of the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited, fully online university, has awarded five $10,000 scholarships to service members wounded in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. Titled “Spirit of Capella Scholarships For Injured Service Members,” the scholarships may be applied to any of Capella's online degree programs. Approximately 16 percent of Capella students are members of the military.

The scholarship applicants responded to five essay questions and submitted disability documentation. The three doctoral and two master’s degree students were selected based on their essay answers and eligibility requirements.

  • Willie Carley of Windsor, NY – PhD in Public Safety
  • Johnny Hayes of Clymer, PA – PhD in Organization and Management
  • Lance Malburg of Belton, TX – MS in Human Services
  • Cristina Mancha of San Antonio, TX – MS in Psychology
  • Kalonji Samuel of Sterling, VA – PhD in Organization and Management

Capella offers the scholarship annually to service members from any branch of the U.S. military who have received a Rating Decision memo of 20 percent disability or higher from the Veterans Administration as a result of being wounded in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. In December 2008, Capella University was named one of the top 20 military-friendly institutions by Military Advanced Education magazine for the second consecutive year.

“As a university with a significant number of students who are members of the military, Capella is committed to supporting those men and women who have sacrificed so much while providing service to our country,” said Nicole Lovald, manager of Capella's Armed Forces support team.
