Markets Soar As Construction Spending Climbs

A surprising increase in construction spending sent the markets soaring during the midday with the Dow leaping 214 points to 8714. Nasdaq jumped 54 points to 1829.

On the upside

PMI Group's (NYSE: PMI) Amended and Restated Credit Agreement came into effect after the company satisfied all necessary conditions.

Lululemon athletica (Nasdaq: LULU) announced its first quarter conference call to be held on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 9:00am EST.

Celldex Therapeutics (Nasdaq: CLDX) announced upbeat results from two Phase 1 clinical studies of its cancer treatment CDX-1307.

On the downside

The Food and Drug Administration requested more information and additional studies from ARCA Biopharma (Nasdaq: ABIO) for its heart failure medication Gencaro.

Colonial BancGroup (NYSE: CNB) founder and chief executive Robert E. Lowder will retire after completing the capital infusion deal with Taylor Bean & Whitaker Mortgage Corp.

While DryShips (Nasdaq: DRYS) said that it currently has no plans to offer more stock, the shipping company still needs covenant waivers for approximately $200 million in debt.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 6 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 3 to 1 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks climbed 19 points to 520.
