PR Log - Dec 06, 2011 - Parts of the midwest were blanketed with wet snow on Tuesday, Nov 29th, 2011 and the National Weather Service of Northern Indiana have predicted high amounts of precipitation thanks to a weather pattern called La Niña. The result will be heavy snow similar or worse than last year.

Lan Niña snowfall during the winter can be very heavy and cause all kinds of damage like downed power lines, frozen plumbing, gutters freezing over, etc. Flood Specialists, Inc. of Chicago says residents and business owners should prepare now before it's too late.

The most important thing to remember about water damage is that it is much easier to fix when caught early. Most people discover they have mold or structural decay from previously unknown water infiltration. The smell is usually what triggers a reaction to call a professional. Residents can follow some simple steps to minimize Chicago water damage but say that those who are not able should call Flood Specialists, Inc. as soon as possible.

1) Clean gutters so that snow melt is unubstructed.
2) Keep the snow cleared away from the base of your home so it doesn't melt into your basement.
3) Insulate your exposed copper water pipes closest to your exterior walls so they don't freeze. Frozen pipes will crack.
4) Keep an eye out for possible problems. If you see ice forming on power lines, inform your local utility. Trees that hang over your roof could have a lot of snow that could break through your roof.

The worst thing a person can do is just sit and wait for the snow to melt says Flood Specialists, Inc.  People need to be aware of their surroundings and report anything that appears dangerous. Also, the elderly need your help too. Reach out to them and exchange phone numbers. Be safe!
