Fairfax, Virginia - A unique voice bank under development will allow people with voice disabilities to speak with a new voice that is closer to their personalities. Three organizations, LC Technologies, Inc., VocaliD and The ALS Association have joined hands to create a voice bank and are seeking donors to share their voice samples.
Voice disability affects over 10 million people worldwide, who until now have relied on just a handful of digital voices that do not match their personalities or body type. The new voice bank will allow them a vast choice of voice options allowing the speaker to choose the one that matches their expected voice based on age, gender, language and other features.
The donated voices will be digitized by VocaliD and stored in a voice bank. The chosen voice will then be blended with the recipient’s vocalizations to create their unique voice. Currently over 20,000 volunteers are engaged with voice donation.
Donating one’s voice is easy. All that is required is high-speed internet access, a computer, e-mail address, Chrome web browser and a USB headset microphone. All donors will receive instructions and an introductory video, and their voices will be added to the volunteer voice bank. About seven hours of total recording time can be split into shorter periods across several weeks using VocaliD’s virtual studio.
The voice bank drive will last officially for 2 months. Volunteers can complete their voice recordings at any time. Those unable to donate their voice can make a momentary donation to the ALS Association’s DC/MD/VA chapter to help those in need. Voice donors will also receive a service project certificate upon completing of voice donation.

These new voices can replace those found in computer automated communication devices. The ALS Association is a national recourse for those who have ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, with a mission to find a cure for the disease and fund services that assist the ALS community and their families.
