Gas Consumption Grows Even At Record Prices, Markets Close Higher

Investors welcomed an Energy Department report indicating that consumption of gasoline continued to grow even as prices surged. The markets closed higher with the Dow climbing 67 points to 12,086. Nasdaq gained 14 points to 2698.

On the upside

RAM Energy Resources (Nasdaq: RAME) will hold its annual stockholders meeting on May 5, 2011 at the Westin New York at Times Square Hotel at 10am.

Record gold prices lifted shares of Harmony Gold Mining (NYSE: HMY), US Gold (NYSE: UXG) and Hecla Mining (NYSE: HL).

Dynasil's (Nasdaq: DYSL) patent claims for advanced radiation detection and increased detector production capacity were approved.

On the downside

Seeking Alpha contributor David Trainer wrote that Eastman Kodak's (NYSE: EK) underfunded pension liability of $2.6 billion could potentially bankrupt the company.

EnerNOC (Nasdaq: ENOC) will provide its EfficiencySMART metering and monitoring equipment to Southern California Edison customers but the stock price dropped.

Newcastle Investment (NYSE: NCT) will offer 15 million common shares through a public offering.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 9 to 7 on the NYSE and by more than 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks added 2 points to 811.
