According to the website set up by the United Nations (UN) in recognition of 2012 as the International Year of the Cooperative, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says, "Cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility." (social.un.org/coopsyear/)
In the United States, the National Cooperative Business Association, reports that cooperatives spend over $25 million in wages, employ over 856,000 full time equivalent workers and generate a total of 2 million jobs each year.
Within the food industry, the democratically organized cooperative business structure allows thousands of family farmers to join together under a cooperatively owned brand, gathers small community grocers into powerful purchasing groups while allowing for autonomy in other parts of their business and provides viable business structures for a host of companies who care about their employees, the environment, other cooperatives and sustainable production practices.
