The concept of corporate philanthropy is nothing new, and many businesses devote substantial resources to raising funds and awareness for various charitable causes. Kuester Management Group, a Charlotte-based association management company, is no different. The company’s ‘Kuester Cares’ program lends support to various philanthropic endeavors year-round—but for the month of September, Kuester Cares truly rose to the next level. Kuester Management Group declared September to be the company’s own charitable Awareness Month, and for each week honored a different cause or charitable group.
“We wanted to devote September to some really focused and driven efforts to raise money and awareness,” comments Bryan Kuester, the President of Kuester Management Group. “Rather than zero in on just one cause, we chose a different one for each week—and each one was chosen to honor one of our employees who is in some way personally impacted by the issue in question.”
For the first week of September, Kuester Management Group worked to raise money and awareness for cerebral palsy, in honor of one member of its maintenance staff. Week Two was devoted to ovarian cancer, in honor of a past employee. The third week’s focus on prostate cancer honored Kuester’s Events Coordinator and Human Resources Coordinator, while Week Four was devoted to Alzheimer’s, in support of one of the company’s property managers as well as its receptionists.
For each week, a relevant Awareness Pack was made available in the Kuester offices, for both employees and guests to learn more and to make their own donations. These packs offered personal stories, some facts about the disease in question, an awareness bracelet, an awareness ribbon, and a special gift. “Each of the packs was assembled by hand, in-house, and all of the proceeds went to reputable foundations fighting for treatments and cures,” Kuester explains. In addition to the awareness packs, Kuester Management Group encouraged its employees to wear different colors, corresponding with the illnesses and related foundations.
The month-long campaign ended up generating several hundred dollars in donations, but Bryan Kuester says the most satisfying aspect was simply raising awareness for the array of illnesses and charitable foundations. “It was gratifying to see our employees and our guests devote themselves to really learning more about so many different conditions, and really developing a heart for seeing them better understood,” he notes.
