No one would ever deny that alcoholism is a tough thing to live with, and that for alcoholics this disease can be life-shattering. However, alcoholism’s toll is not just paid by alcoholics themselves. Addiction can also have supremely disruptive and destructive effects on relationships, marriages, and family life. Chapters Capistrano has released a new statement to the press, commenting on the treacherous nature of living with an alcoholic.
“Those who live with an alcoholic have to strike a precarious balance,” comments Mike Shea, founder of Chapters Capistrano, a southern California drug and alcohol rehab center. “You have to remember that the person is still the person you’ve known and loved, but he or she is now in the grip of a dangerous disease. It “can be a living hell: unpredictable and dangerous, yet sometimes exciting and romantic,” the article notes. It continues to affirm that those who live with addicts live with constant uncertainty, never knowing when they may be blamed or accused of something, or when a social event will be completely disrupted by the disease of addiction.
The article goes on to outline some particular hardships of living with an alcoholic. “As the addict becomes more irresponsible, we pick up the slack and do more, often becoming the sole functioning parent or even the sole provider,” says Psych Central. “We’re unable to lean on our partner for comfort or support. Meanwhile, we rescue him or her from disasters, medical emergencies, accidents, or jail, make excuses for no-shows at work and family gatherings, and patch up damaged property, relationships, and self-inflicted mishaps. We may also endure financial hardship, criminality, domestic violence, or infidelity due to the addict’s behavior.”
“Living with an alcoholic can bring feelings of fear and uncertainty, and it can significantly complicate daily living and socialization,” Shea adds. “Moreover, it is simply painful. You’re watching someone you care about deeply destroy himself or herself, and you witness how helpless that person really is and feels. None of that is easy.”
In fact, living with an alcoholic can become so painful that it turns into an obsession in its own right. As the Psych Central article notes, spouses and family members can become doggedly focused on predicting their alcoholic loved one’s behaviors, or looking for him or her at bars and clubs.
