The markets opened lower with the Dow falling 65 points to 17,665 over continued concerns of an interest rate increase. Nasdaq tumbled 43 points to 5,051.


On the upside


Astellas Pharma will pay a premium of $8.50 per share in cash to acquire Ocata Therapeutics (Nasdaq: OCAT).


Rackspace Hosting (Nasdaq: RAX) reported higher third quarter earnings and revenue that beat analyst expectations.


Atwood Oceanics (NYSE: ATW) announced that one of its ultra-deepwater drillships currently under construction will be contracted for a drilling program offshore Brazil.

On the downside


Shares of Anavex Life Sciences (Nasdaq: AVXL) continued to drop.


Flotek Industries (NYSE: FTK) acknowledged that incorrect information was reported from its FracMax database.


Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG) stock extended its losses.


In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of more than 10 to 9 on the NYSE and by nearly 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 slipped 2 points to 2,076. Bitcoin dropped $19 to $357.
