November 26, 2015 – We wear jeans – all of the time, and have done so for over a century. Jeans can be comfortable and sexy… but mostly if you’re standing still, and we do not stand still. The average American sits 9.3 hours a day – while commuting, eating a meal, or working at a desk, and when not sitting we are bending, twisting or squatting. Most jeans build tension at stress and flexion points like the hips and the knees when we sit or twist, which can be linked to poor circulations, fatigue and pain.
In the USA alone, almost half a billion pairs of this icon fashion are sold every year and the average adult owns 5 pairs of jeans. It then becomes clear why two engineers spent the past 5 years in scientific laboratories at major universities to create a pair of jeans that would adapt to your body’s movement and characteristics. They came up with FYT Jeans, which has just launched a campaign on Kickstarter.
Elazer Edelman, Director of the MIT Biomedical Engineering Centre and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School explains: “Our body shape and measurements change with motion, but the clothes we wear are not designed to adapt. What fits in one scenario, may not in another, creating discomfort and even harm. Garment design should conform to body position and posture, not just shape and size. We used sensors to measure compression forces, pressure and temperature in different positions, and using this information developed jeans that reduce compression up to 90% and minimized local concentrations of temperature and pressure. FYT Jeans adapt perfectly to individual movement and body characteristics, adding comfort without sacrificing style.”
Project creators Elazer Edelman and Miguel Carvalho, also a research affiliate at MIT specializing in Textile Engineering, are the founding team behind this Cambridge-based startup. Together, they have applied the most sophisticated imaging technology, 3D body scanners, thermal mannequins, and thermodynamic sensors (pressure and temperature) to optimize materials and design, developing and texting several prototypes of FYT Jeans.
After securing a patent over the design, they are currently focused on sharing the concept and raising a minimum of $30K on Kickstarter, to finance their first mass production. They expect to begin complementary delivery in the USA and Europe before 2016.
