Lower open on profit taking

The markets opened lower with the Dow falling 49 points to 18,758 as investors locked in profits. Nasdaq lost 15 points to 5,192.


On the upside


Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA) impressed with sharply higher third quarter earnings and revenue that surpassed analyst expectations .


The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use of the European Medicines Agency recommended the conditional marketing authorization of PTC Therapeutics' (Nasdaq: PTCT) nonsense mutation Duchenne muscular dystrophy treatment Translarna.


Shares of DryShips (Nasdaq: DRYS) continued climbing.


On the downside


Investors locked in profits on Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX).


A Brazilian federal court ruled that Vale (NYSE: VALE), BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) and Samarco Mineracao must deposit $354 million into a fund to clean up and repair damage from a catastrophic dam failure in November 2015 that killed 19 people and caused an environmental disaster.


Michael Kors (NYSE: KORS) reported lower second quarter earnings and revenue and forecast current quarter as well as full year results that fell short of expectations.


In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of 10 to 9 on the NYSE while advancers outpaced decliners by more than 7 to 5 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 dropped 9 points to 2,158. Bitcoin added $2 to $712.
