14 U.S. companies seed worldwide change with big donation to Whole Planet Foundation®

It may not be a historical holiday, but for more than 851,000 families worldwide who have been empowered to lift themselves out of poverty through microcredit, Oct. 25 is a life-changing date. It is the day Whole Foods Market® (Nasdaq: WFM) launched Whole Planet Foundation with a mission to fight global poverty through microcredit. Nine years later, the foundation has funded $36 million in small loans to microcredit clients across 61 countries, empowering them with a chance to lift themselves out of poverty.

This Oct. 25, Whole Planet Foundation will celebrate its ninth birthday by thanking 14 suppliers and companies who have supported the foundation with a $25,000 donation this year – a group of donors they refer to as its 2014 Poverty is Unnecessary Fund® partners. To help commemorate the day, select Whole Foods Market stores companywide will host interactive events such as scavenger hunts, product demos and social media giveaways to spotlight the tremendous role donors have played in the foundation’s success.

“We are forever thankful to our Poverty is Unnecessary Fund partners for recognizing these microcredit programs and supporting our mission,” said Philip Sansone, president and executive director for Whole Planet Foundation. “Funding microcredit is about so much more than giving money. It empowers people with the resources they need to reshape their own future. The impact is real, and the change lasts generations. We could not do it without our donors.”
