Dow Edges Higher as Indices Rally Off Lows

The stock market indices had a strange session after a very steep opening gap down, and then further downside movement. They then snapped back sharply, paused at resistance, backed off, but held support, and came on again in the afternoon, reaching the session highs with about 35-45 minutes to go. They rolled over hard into the close with about 10 minutes to go, and snapped back sharply in the last 5 minutes to preserve some of the gains on the Dow. Net on the day, the Dow closed up 18.97 at 13,596.93, just 3 points off the high and about 93 points off the low. The S&P 500 did well to snap back 11 points off the low, down .79 at 1460.26, but couldn't quite get into the plus column, although it was just a point off the high. The Nasdaq 100 came back 19 points and closed down 2.33 at 2861.70. So all of the indices snapped back, but only the Dow got back into the plus column. Advance-declines were still 3 to 2 negative on New York Stock Exchange, and 3 to 2 negative on Nasdaq as well. Up/down volume was nearly 2 to 1 negative on New York, with total volume of 632 million shares. Nasdaq traded over 1 3/4 billion, and had a 4 to 3 negative volume ratio. Despite the snapback, we appear to have rallied back to resistance, so it's going to be key to get a follow-through tomorrow. If they open lower and/or take out today's lows, the market is in trouble short-term. We'll have to wait and see. TheTechTrader.com board, as a result, had a very, very mixed day, but quite a few of the stocks we follow had a big day. Questcor Pharmaceutical (QCOR), which came back with a big rally, was up 4.07 to 30.42, or 15 1/2%, on 37 million shares, an 1100% increase in volume, reaching as high as 31.86 and as low as 27.10 earlier in the day. Other gainers of note included low-priced Synergetics USA, Inc. (SURG), up 61 cents to 5.10, or 13 1/2%. Low-priced Cleveland BioLabs, Inc. (CBLI) gained 38 cents to 2.51, or 18%. Junior biotech stocks did well today. ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ACAD) was up 32 cents to 2.76, or 13%, on 5.4 million shares. Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (CYCC) gained 59 cents to 5.73, or 11 1/2%. Ampio Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AMPE) spiked 47 cents to 3.87, or 13.8%, on 2.3 million shares. Amyris, Inc. (AMRS) closed up 33 cents to 4.09, or 9%, on 1 million shares. New issue, TRULIA, Inc. (TRLA), also a junior biotech, jumped 7.00 to 24.00 even, or 41%, on 11 million shares today. Cbeyond, Inc. (CBEY) was up 80 cents to 9.85, or 9%, ZAGG Inc. (ZAGG) up 54 cents to 8.92, Caribou Coffee Company, Inc. (CBOU) 90 cents to 14.71, and Cray Inc. (CRAY) 76 cents to 13.18. Apogee Enterprises, Inc. (APOG) jumped 1.88 to 19.50, almost 11%, on strong earnings, ZAGG Inc. (ZAGG) up 1.59 to 27.24, Dollar Tree, Inc. (DLTR) 2.35 to 49.41, Susser Holdings Corporation (SUSS) 1.08 to 39.20, Elizabeth Arden, Inc. (RDEN) 1.81 to 45.77, and Owens Corning (OC) 1.25 to 35.12, were among the point-plus gainers on our board today. In addition, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) jumped 1.70 to 58.74, and Google Inc. (GOOG) managed to edge ahead 62 cents after reaching a new 5-year high at 731.38, closing at 728.12. On the downside, Apple Inc. (AAPL) closed down 3.40 to 698.70, 1 1/2 points off the high and 5 points off the low. It was a decent close, but still down on the day. Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) gave back 87 cents to 260.81. VirnetX Holding Corp (VHC) dropped 1.66 to 27.16, along with several other stocks on our board today. The Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) lost 1.83 to 110.66, and the Direxion Daily Small Cap Bull 3X Shares (TNA) dropped 84 cents to 64.87. Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices had a big down gap at the opening, followed by a quick bounce, and then lower lows, which turned the market around when the NDX tagged 2842, and change, and the S&P 500 tagged 1450. That resulted in a strong 3-wave snapback. After a late pullback, they snapped back again, and went into the close mixed on the session, narrowly so on all 3 indices. The Dow closed up, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 closed down today. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Good Trading! Harry
