On July 12, Colle Farmers Market responds to an article published on Las Cruces Sun-News detailing the method New Mexico State University uses to promote organic farming through its promising business prospects.
According to a July 5 article published on Las Cruces Sun-News titled "NMSU Students Learn Secrets of the Multi-million Dollar Organic Produce Market," New Mexico State University's (NMSU) College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences encourages its students to enter the field of organic farming by integrating the business into the curriculum. The article says the school utilizes its Student-Centered Field Lab to teach students how to farm organically.
In the article, NMSU crop consulting student Gerardo Toca says, "Learning to do this organically is an awesome experience - just knowing your food doesn't contain harsh pesticides. I can help other farmers learn about getting a profit using sustainable agriculture."
The crops are then sold to 100 West Café, a student run restaurant on campus. Excess crops are also sold to other local companies. Students use the sale of these crops to gain experience in product pricing, negotiation and product presentation, the article says.
A representative from Colle Farmers Market says programs like NMSU teach people about how farming affects the environment. "It's important to show the public and teach the future generations that farming organically is the best way to keep the Earth healthy," he says. "NMSU's entire program is like a giant ecosystem that promotes sustainability and helps people realize that taking care of the Earth is just as important as growing food. More colleges should add similar programs, even if it's just promoting an organic community garden. We need to make sure people know that organic food is not only better for you, but it's better for the environment."
The Colle rep says promoting organic farming is not only a smart business decision, but is also beneficial for the economy. "Organic farming has become a fast-growing sector of agriculture," the rep says. "Investing in such a business only reaps benefits for everyone. The best decision future farmers can make is to go into organic farming because of its booming possibilities, allowing for a more stable business start up."
Colle Farmers Market is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation.
