Myrtle Beach Asbestos Dump Example of Private Greed and Public Incompetence, Columbia Lawyer Says

Motel demolition debris potentially harmful and inexcusable, says South Carolina injury attorney Bert Louthian.
PRLog - May 2, 2014 - COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina personal injury lawyer Bert Louthian today said Palmetto State taxpayers should insist on more effective enforcement of regulations regarding asbestos abatement and other environmentally hazardous dumping.

According to an April 26, 2014, report in The State,  a company licensed with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has for years been investigated, fined, and taken to court for illegally dumping asbestos-containing materials, some of it in the midst of oceanfront properties serving families on vacation.  Land Services of South Carolina LLC has piled up the debris from demolition of the Golden Sands Motel on the parking lot of the Holiday South Motel at 2605 S. Ocean Blvd., which is also to be demolished, according to CarolinaLive.com.   That debris, approximately 140,000 cubic feet of it, has tested positive for asbestos.

“Most people would just look at this pile of rubble and think it’s an unwelcome eyesore in an area of natural beauty like our seashore,” Louthian said.  “They would be surprised to know that it contains cancer-causing asbestos, free to be carried by ocean breezes up and down the Grand Strand.  They would reasonably expect government regulators to protect the environment and public from companies which seem to have no compunction against repeatedly violating state and federal laws against illegal dumping of hazardous materials,” he said.

Land Services has been cited and fined for numerous asbestos disposal violations, according to The State, but, despite its being subject to consent orders requiring proper clean-up and disposal, the company continues in operation.

“This news is especially disturbing – and ironic – since Gov. Nikki Haley proclaimed April to be Zero Tolerance for Litter Month.  Cigarette butts and Styrofoam cups are unsightly, but asbestos is dangerous.  Somebody needs to crack down on these illegal dumpers in a meaningful way.  We need to have zero tolerance for those who are more concerned about protecting their bottom line than they are about obeying the law and protecting unsuspecting residents and tourists,” Louthian said.
