Turn of the Century British Traincar to Roll Again with Help from Crowdsourced Funding

By: Get News

Sep 9, 2014, UK – In 1903 the North Eastern Railway developed a train that challenged steam, and is the forerunner of modern trains. They are engineering to make it environmentally friendly in terms of economy, emissions and noise thanks to a new Cummins engine that has been adapted to run the old motors.

Called the ‘autocar’ it was powered by a petrol engine supplying electricity to electric motors. In 1930 it was withdrawn from service and the body became a holiday home in Yorkshire. Rescued ten years ago, restoration is well underway thanks to the support of Heritage Lottery Fund and other grants. This isn’t just ‘some old railcar’; it is a vital piece of heritage history. Once running again, it will fulfil a new purpose as an important education tool.

The plan is to fit it with AV equipment for educational/historical films, and rail safety messages. It can also be a rolling theatre for enjoyable films for community use. It is being engineered to make it environmentally friendly in terms of economy, emissions and noise thanks to a new Cummins engine that has been adapted to run the old motors.

In addition to the main restoration, plans are also underway to restore an accompanying ‘autocoach’ that was made in York in 1904. This will allow the train to carry a reasonable number of passengers once the project is complete.  Your support for this heritage project is the perfect way to both preserve our history and be a part of it!

Thanks to the efforts of many dedicated to preserving British history, the Electric Autocar Trust already raised £500,000 to refurbish the old train get it ready to travel again. Now, they need your help to raise the final £50,000. Your donations will help to ensure that the complex engineering systems are updated – in particular it is essential that the critical braking systems be modernized to meet all safety standards. In exchange for your support – there are plenty of perks on offer including free travel, and VIP days.

For just £45.00 you can get two family tickets for a return trip on one of Britain’s heritage railways that the autocar train may visit. For a brilliant and unique marketing coup consider sponsorship of one of the seats (donation of £250.00 or more).

This is a great way to promote a message, get new exposure for a company advertisement, or even pay tribute to a loved one. You’ll will be credited on the original advertising space above your seat. Other rewards include booking the entire railcar for a special corporate or family event (imagine a vintage wedding!). Every pound gets the Electric Autocar one step closer to carrying a new generation of passengers.

Share the campaign links below widely with everyone in your networks, the more people involved the sooner you can take a ride back in time.
