Markets drop on possible rate increase

Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen's comment that an interest rate increase in December was a very likely possibility sent the markets down during the midday with the Dow dropping 79 points to 17,838. Nasdaq lost 18 points to 5,126.


On the upside


Shares of Genetic Technologies (Nasdaq: GENE) continued climbing.


Energy Focus (Nasdaq: EFOI) swung to a better than expected profit for the third quarter as revenue climbed.


Diplomat Pharmacy (NYSE: DPLO) impressed with sharply higher third quarter earnings and revenue that surpassed expectations prompting the company to lift its full year forecast.

On the downside


FARO Technolgies (Nasdaq: FARO) fell to a loss for the third quarter as revenue dropped.


Avon (NYSE: AVP) fell to a greater than expected third quarter loss as revenue tumbled.


United States Steel (NYSE: X) reported a wider than expected loss for the third quarter.


In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of more than 5 to 3 on the NYSE by more than 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 dropped 12 points to 2,097. Bitcoin soared $58 to $443.
