2017 Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition for Metalsmiths Includes Unusual Innovation

By: PRLog
Fine jewelry, a chess set, lighting, sculptures and a fountain... what do these objects have in common? And how did an all-glass sculpture win a metal arts Innovation Award?
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Oct. 13, 2017 - PRLog -- The annual Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition celebrated its 6th year with entries from metalsmiths in England, Scotland, Canada, Chile, Thailand, Iran, Italy, Sweden and 15 U.S. states.

In addition to 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place, Honorable Mention and 21 Jurors' Choice selections, judges also presented the optional (rarely awarded) Innovation Award. Ed Lay of El Cerrito, CA, U.S., won the honor for innovative explorations in lost metal. Thin copper is foldformed, then enameled on one surface. The enameled piece is placed in an etching bath to remove the copper-- and the resulting piece is all glass.

2017 prize list:
1st Place: "Curva" by Ferruccio Maierna of Rome, Italy
2nd: "Silver Mouth Pitcher Plant" by Dorian S. Custodia of Sellersville, PA, U.S
3rd: "Freedom" by Chelsea Dyck of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Innovation: "Fold Forms in Glass" by Ed Lay of El Cerrito, CA, U.S.
Honorable Mentions: "Straze Rocking Vessels" by Alex O'Connor of St. Just, Cornwall, England, U.K., and "Chess Set" by Amir Nasiri of Tehran, Iran.

Artists often ask about the jury process. Judges begin deliberation with independent scoring, followed by verbal negotiations to select prize winners. The jury then proceeds to a Jurors' Choice round, where additional pieces are recognized. This year juror Merle White wrote a personal narrative describing that experience at www.interweave.com/article/jewelry/2017-foldforming-winners-lewton-brain-competition-innovative-metalsmithing-technique/.

Next year's event will open in mid-May 2018. Visit www.foldforming.org to view every piece recognized since the event began in 2012. Also look for the story in Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist magazine's upcoming Nov 2017 issue, and enjoy the annual results video at https://youtu.be/I8IAbgthXmk.

Developed in the early 1980's by Charles Lewton-Brain, foldforming is a complex system for working with sheet metal that continues to grow and change as artists experiment with it. Due to its versatility, foldforming attracts goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths, sculptors and metal artists of all types. Each year, artists submit a captivating array of metal work including jewelry, creative wearables, sculpture, wall art, lighting, vessels, architectural pieces and utility objects in a wide range of metals.

2017 Jury: 1) Charles Lewton-Brain of Alberta, Canada; Artist Goldsmith, Educator, Author; 2) Merle White of PA., U.S.; Editor-in-Chief, Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist magazine, 3) Seth Rosen of MA, U.S.; Owner, International Gem Society and Ganoksin.
