Campbell Soup Company Makes School Lunches Healthier and More Affordable

Campbell Soup Company (NYSE:CPB) today announced that its North America Foodservice division has made it easier and more affordable for U.S. schools to provide children with nourishing lunch options at schools across the country.

Campbell has reformulated and expanded its popular line of soups offered in schools, reduced the price of its Campbells® Healthy Request®products and reformulated Pepperidge Farm® snacks served in schools to meet the standards outlined by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation - a partnership between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association - which Campbell was one of the first participants to join in October 2006.

These efforts reflect the companys commitment to provide nutritious and affordable product offerings for children. Campbells North America Foodservice division provides products that fall into the simple meals and snacking categories to schools in all 50 states throughout the U.S.

We all want our children to eat well, even when we can't be with them," said Sean Connolly, President-North America Foodservice. When we send them off to school, we hope they'll be able to find nourishing, affordable lunch options. Campbell's North America Foodservice is focused on wellness and value. We are proud to promote the benefits of our products that meet the Alliance criteria for calories, fat and sodium, and provide schools with more products that are affordable and exciting to children."

Campbells school soup portfolio now includes a 50 oz. variety of lower-sodium Campbells Chicken & Stars soup, lower-sodium versions of Campbells Vegetarian Vegetable Alphabet and Campbells Mega Noodle soup and four varieties of Campbells Healthy Request soups which have been reduced in price to be consistent with the cost of the original varieties. All of these soups meet the government criteria for healthy foods -- contain 480 mg of sodium or less per serving, low in fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and contain a positive nutrient. In addition, all of the soups are under 100 calories per serving, do not contain added MSG1 and offer the great taste kids love. The new varieties will be available in December. The price reduction on Campbells Healthy Request soups has already gone into effect.

Additionally, 10 Pepperidge Farm products meet the guidelines for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The products all are trans fat free, offer one grain serving per pack and can be served for breakfast, lunch or during after-school programs. These products include:

  • Goldfish Snack Crackers in Cheddar, Parmesan and Whole Grain Cheddar;
  • Flavor Blasted Goldfish Snack Crackers in Kickin Ranch and Hot and Spicy Cheddar;
  • Giant Goldfish Grahams in Chocolate and Cinnamon; and
  • Goldfish Physedibles® Animal Crackers in Strawberry, Lemon and Vanilla.

As part of this effort, Campbell is sponsoring a promotion in which ten school districts throughout the U.S. will win a Wellness Day at one of its schools. The day will include cooking demonstrations, healthy culinary activities and nutrition education sessions.
