The most prestigious weekend of OPA Offshore Racing will crown both the OPA National and World Champion!
PRLog - Aug. 11, 2014 - SOLOMONS ISLAND, Md. -- For the fifth year in a row, offshore racing fans in Southern Maryland will be treated to an exciting display of power, speed, and racing skill as the 2014 Solomons Offshore Grand Prix (SOGP) returns to Solomons Island from October 4-6th.  Two local boating clubs, the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association and Maryland Powerboat Club, host the 2014 SOGP under the auspices of the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA).

Racing fans from across the country in an online poll last year voted Solomons Island their “Favorite Race Venue” by a huge margin. Fans and racers alike appreciate the “Southern Maryland Hospitality” extended to all visitors, and claim the Solomons Island boardwalk offers the best views of any OPA race site in the country. The powerful race boats, with helicopters filming overhead, go roaring by within feet of the boardwalk, close enough to taste the saltwater spray!

As the last regular-season race of the year, Solomons Offshore Grand Prix traditionally crowns the OPA National Offshore Champion. The Solomons race which was originally scheduled for September 14th was changed to the first weekend in October when OPA added a new September race in Detroit. Along with that change, OPA also announced they would be bringing the OPA World Championship from Ocean City, MD to Solomons Island. This changed the 2014 SOGP race schedule from one day to two days of racing, with the National Finals on Saturday and the World Championship determined on Sunday.

Solomons Offshore Grand Prix, with the addition of the OPA World Championship, becomes the most prestigious race weekend of the entire season. Over 40 race teams will descend on Solomons Island hoping to stake their claim in racing history. Every class of fast boat is expected to be represented, from the small, single-engine Class 600 boats all the way up to the awe-inspiring Extreme Class boats that can reach speeds of 170 mph or more.

Beginning Thursday, October 3rd, race teams will set up in the “Dry Pit” area beneath the Gov. Thomas Johnson Bridge. The public are invited to visit the pits starting Friday and throughout the weekend for an up-close look at these impressive boats and a chance to chat with the drivers and race teams. Saturday evening will feature the 2nd Annual SOGP Boat Parade down Solomons’ main street.
