PRLog - Aug. 27, 2014 - The 2015 Honda Fit just recently debuted at Community Honda of Orland Park and it's already winning awards. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has granted it their coveted Top Safety Pick award, marking it as one of the safest new vehicles on the road today.
In order for a vehicle to be one of the select few to earn the Top Safety Pick award, it must earn the IIHS's highest ranking of “good” in their four major tests as well as at least an “acceptable” in the new small overlap front crash test. No vehicle in its class has earned a higher score than Honda's Fit in the small overlap front crash test.
Art St. Cyr, Vice President of auto operations at American Honda responded to the award saying, “Honda's deep-rooted commitment to safety and to our customers is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that we were not satisfied with anything but a Top Safety Pick for the new 2015 Honda Fit.”
Early production models of the new Fit were released for testing in March for the 2014 IIHS awards, and initially, despite earning “good” rankings in the four major tests, the Fit received only a “marginal” score in the small overlap front crash test, which simply would not do. Honda engineers worked diligently to ensure that the Fit would earn that safety seal of approval and, by the time the design hit the roads, the Fit had been updated to earn a Top Safety Pick award.
St. Cyr stressed that although Honda is not required to cater to the IIHS, this is all part of their “long-standing commitment to safety and focus on customers. Honda voluntarily engineered a product update which allowed all early-production vehicles to share the 2014 Top Safety Pick rating."
