PRLog - March 10, 2015 - Created by Barry Flood as a final year degree project in 2008. Now almost seven years on, the site has amassed over 5,000 submissions from members of the public, covering every aspect of Irish life to include Irish Slang, Irish Phrases, Irish Wives Tales, Jokes & more.
When asked about the origins of IrishSlang.info, Barry had the following to say:
“Whenever I was at university in Belfast, from the first day I got there, people were making fun of my accent,” he recalled. “They were making fun of the words I was saying, some of the things they just couldn’t understand. "
“So for our dissertation, we had to create a website and I decided to build IrishSlang.info. I had been getting that much guff for so many years for not making sense, I thought I would try and put the whole lot into words so people could understand. People don't realise, that something you say can have a completely different meaning just five miles away!”
Seven years and 5,000 entries later, IrishSlang.info has sections devoted to every walk of Irish life from drinking and food to fighting and sport. It even boasts its own mascot, ‘Ned the Horse’.
One of the best features is a section devoted to the slang of every county in Ireland. Its contents could prove a vital lifeline for someone unfamiliar with the Tyrone lingo and in need of decoding a tale of how ‘some through other cub just got into a hanlin over a cuttie with a stoven hallian’.
