In a national study, roughly 15 out of 100 substance abusers and dependents actively seek professional rehabilitation assistance while a good 28 out of 100 eventually end up in the emergency room of a hospital facility because of drug overdose. Unfortunately, the greater majority of drug users do not use these community resources that are made available to them.
Health experts in West Virginia believe that it has something to do with the legal implications of admitting oneself in an addiction center. Showing up in a substance treatment or rehab center has been regarded as an open admission of one’s guilt. However, health workers reiterate that this is not the case.
Many of the rehab centers’ rehabilitees have all been successfully reintegrated into their respective communities without much legal fuss. This is because drug dependents are seen as victims of circumstance whereby majority succumb to inherent human weakness. As such, West Virginia’s rehab facilities are trying to spread the word about the many benefits of seeking professional help.

The last piece to the puzzle is the support of the community, particularly the family. A supportive, not punitive and condescending, community is required to encourage many of West Virginia’s substance abusers to seek professional help. Rehab centers can also help communities and families gain a better understanding of the state-wide effort to help the victims of illicit drugs and addicting substances.
If these three pieces to the puzzle are established and ascertained by rehab centers, the glimmer of hope might as well become a beacon of change for the entire state of West Virginia.
