Dow Closes Up Ahead Of Alcoa Earnings

The Dow closed higher by gaining 45 points to 10,663 ahead of Alcoa's earnings release after market close. Nasdaq slipped 4 points to 2312.

On the upside

Mindray Medical (NYSE: MR) released higher preliminary full year the results.

Huntington Bancshares (Nasdaq: HBAN) named former chief finanical officer, treasurer and director of Charter One Financial and First Federal of Michigan Richard W. Neu to its board.

Shares of Alcoa (NYSE: AA) rose ahead of its earnings release.

On the downside

Achillion Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ACHN) reported additional upbeat preliminary data from a Phase 1b study of its hepatitis C treatment ACH-1625.

Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL) expects fourth quarter earnings and full year revenue to top estimates.

Chordiant Software (Nasdaq: CHRD) declared that the unsolicited $3.46 per share stock offer by CDC Software (Nasdaq: CDCS) was not in the best interest of Chordiant shareholders.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of 3 to 2 on the NYSE while decliners barely edged out advancers by a slim margin on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks eased a fraction to 643.
