Consumer Sentiment Rises, Markets Advance

The markets extended its gains during the midday with the Dow climbing 44 points to 12,447 as consumer sentiment rose in May. Nasdaq rose 13 points to 2796.

On the upside

Shares of Solazyme (Nasdaq: SZYM) soared in its market debut.

Shares of Clean Diesel Technologies (Nasdaq: CDTI) continued climbing after announcing on Wednesday that the company received orders of approximately $2 million for its verified emission reduction products.

The Bedford Report issued a research report saying that growth of China's agricultural sector has benefitted AgFeed Industries (Nasdaq: FEED).

On the downside

China Information Technology (Nasdaq: CNIT) announced the resignation of chief financial officer Jackie You Kazmerzak effective May 30, 2011.

Mentor Graphics (Nasdaq: MENT) narrowed first quarter losses but the company forecast current quarter and full year results below analyst expectations.

Investors locked in profits on SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD), whose shares surged the last two days after the company filed for an initial public offering for the SandRidge Permian Trust.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 5 to 2 on the NYSE and by more than 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 4 points to 835.
