The American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC–SC) recently awarded The LPA Group Incorporated (LPA), a unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE Amex: BKR), with two 2012 Engineering Honor Awards in both the Small Projects and Transportation categories.
LPA provided engineering services to Kershaw County, S.C., for the Wildlife Road Design-Build Replacement which received the award in the Small Projects category. The project was selected to receive the award because LPA developed an original performance-based design-build approach focused on environmental, hydraulic, and bridge construction constraints at the site while encouraging innovation in construction practice and techniques. The end result of this innovative approach was a project that was rapidly completed, on time, with site impacts below the threshold limits resulting in approximately 35 percent reduction in the cost estimated for conventional construction bidding approaches. The project was completed in March 2011 and resulted in an overall savings of more than $150,000 from initial estimates.
The Transportation award category project was awarded to the Palmetto Commerce Parkway Phase II project in North Charleston, S.C., because the combined work of LPA and Coleman-Snow Consultants accelerated the delivery of Palmetto Commerce Parkway Phase II and reduced project cost while expanding public awareness of the natural cultural resources along the project corridor. Through extensive coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State Historic Preservation office, a feasible and responsible project design was developed, resulting in a savings of approximately $11 million for Charleston County taxpayers.
