The U.S. Department of Education Approves Four Additional Capella University FlexPath Direct Assessment Degree Programs

Expanding on its unique direct-assessment programs that offer the opportunity to substantially lower the cost and amount of time needed to earn a degree, Capella University (NASDAQ:CPLA) has announced that the U.S. Department of Education has approved four additional degree programs in its innovative FlexPath learning model.

FlexPath uses a competency-based, direct-assessment learning model rather than the traditional credit-hour standard. This allows students to work at their own pace, which offers increased flexibility and the potential to reduce the cost and time to complete a program. Capella was the first school in the country approved by the U.S. Department of Education to offer competency-based bachelor's and master's degree programs that utilize an approved direct-assessment learning model as opposed to the traditional credit-hour standard. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is a regionally accredited online university* that offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers.

“FlexPath is an important innovation for students who are self-directed, highly motivated, and comfortable learning independently. It allows students to control the pace at which they work, offering a significant potential to reduce the cost and time it takes to complete a degree,” said Scott Kinney, president of Capella University. “The original focus of our FlexPath offerings was our bachelor’s in business and MBA degree programs. We are now expanding FlexPath to better serve the needs of our learners in additional academic areas, including information technology and psychology. These new programs will allow us to deliver a more flexible program option to more of our working adult students, and to expand our FlexPath offerings in a thoughtful, purposeful manner.”

The following new degree progams in FlexPath have been approved by our regional accreditor, The Higher Learning Commission, and are now also approved by the U.S. Department of Education:

Capella’s existing FlexPath offerings that have received approval from The Higher Learning Commission and the U.S. Department of Education are the Bachelor of Science in Business and the Master of Business Administration.
