CSC Reports FY 2014 Annual Corporate Responsibility Progress

CSC (NYSE: CSC) today announced the release of its annual corporate responsibility and sustainability report, detailing the company’s social and environmental sustainability achievements in Fiscal Year 2014.

CSC focuses its corporate responsibility efforts in five areas: Environment, Clients, Employees, Community, and Governance. The company reported progress in all five categories.

“As we strive to improve performance across our business, our commitment to corporate responsibility and sustainability consistently guides us,” said Mike Lawrie, president and chief executive officer, CSC. “By integrating CR imperatives into our business strategy, corporate decision making and benchmarks of overall performance, we can address triple-bottom-line goals and serve all our stakeholders as effectively as possible.”

Findings of CSC’s annual corporate responsibility and sustainability report include:

Environment – CSC made solid strides in the first year of its targeted three-year program to reduce energy usage by 10 percent at its data centers and facilities. Reducing annual energy usage by 7 percent achieved a decrease of 30,472 tons of Scope 1 (Direct) and Scope 2 (Indirect) CO2e emissions across its entire real-estate portfolio. This reduction is equivalent to the annual emissions of 6,000 passenger vehicles.

CSC achieved its first ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard at its UK Kent datacenters, adopting a systemized approach to energy management. This standard, along with diligent and inventive energy conservation strategies, allowed the company to reduce by approximately 2 million kilowatt hours the energy use from these facilities year over year. This new standard complements the ISO 14001 Environmental standard already in place in eleven CSC data centers across the UK, Australia, Denmark, Spain, and Luxembourg.

Employees – In FY 2014 CSC employees completed more than 672,000 hours of professional development training through the company’s virtual CSC University.

CSC has hired nearly 1,000 military veterans in the reporting year, 300 of whom are veterans with a disability. The company has been named a Top Veteran Friendly Employer by GI Jobs magazine, a Top Military Spouse Employer by Military Spouse and a Best for Vets Employer by Military Times EDGE. CSC participates in the 100,000 Jobs Mission to share veteran recruitment best practices and work with other companies to reach an expanded goal of hiring 200,000 veterans by 2020.

Community – CSC’s charitable foundation aligned its philanthropy and community investment to business priorities and focused giving in three areas:

  • Education, which prioritizes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Supporting STEM education programs helps prepare young people for work in the global economy and strengthens the next-generation IT workforce that powers CSC’s business and gives rise to innovative ideas that can help change the world.
  • Health and Wellness, particularly for veterans, disabled and children. By reaching out to help the most vulnerable, in many places around the world, CSC is demonstrating a commitment to transforming lives.
  • Disaster Relief Responding to the destruction caused by typhoons, cyclones and floods, donating funds and enabling CSC employees to support relief efforts such as delivering food and emergency supplies directly to those affected by these devastating natural disasters.

Governance – For Fiscal Year 2014, CSC formalized its sustainability reporting to meet the latest Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Standard – engaging with a number of key clients, partners and community stakeholders – to help focus the company’s approach to sustainability reporting and help to define its future ambitions and goals.

Awards and Recognition – In recognizing these achievements, the FTSE Group, owned by the London Stock Exchange Group and a leader in the provision of global index and analytical solutions, invited CSC to participate in its FTSE4Good Index Series for the fifth consecutive year. The Business in the Community (BITC) CR Index, a business-led charity that annually ranks the most responsible companies in the UK, maintained CSC at its highest “platinum” ranking. And CSC was named one of the Top 100 Best Corporate Citizens for 2014 by CR Magazine.
