Natomas Unified School District to Receive Energy Efficient Lighting through SPURR Procurement Program

The School Project for Utility Rate Reduction (SPURR), a joint powers authority working with California public agencies, has signed Natomas Unified School District as its first client for its innovative LED Lighting Equipment Program. The program will greatly reduce the energy costs and environmental impact at NUSD schools. The contract is valued at approximately $225,000.

“We’re thrilled to see Natomas sign up for this valuable program,” said SPURR Managing Director Michael Rochman. “We’ve been working on an LED solution for more than a year. We expect many schools and public agencies to make affordable, energy efficient changes like this one.”

This LED project will cover all exterior lighting and gymnasiums for Natomas High School, Gateway Middle School, Discovery High School and Jefferson Elementary. LED lights last 5-7 years longer than traditional bulbs and use significantly less energy while generating less heat. NUSD schools will reduce energy usage by roughly 90 kW per year following the switch. The new lights are scheduled to be fully installed by May 2016.

SPURR expects continued interest and growth in the LED program considering its cost and energy savings. Rochman expects to sign contracts as many as five LED clients by the end of the year. SPURR’s business model allows it to offer pre-negotiated LED vendor rates to California public agencies on over 500 high quality LED solutions, saving clients time and money.

ReGreen, a company specializing in energy efficient lighting, will install the new lights for NUSD. Over 250 California public school districts, county offices of education, community college districts and municipalities are currently members of SPURR for procurement and consulting programs for natural gas, electricity, solar energy, telecommunications and expense management. There is no cost to join SPURR and membership is not required for program participation.
