Indonesia’s PT Kereta Api Plans Upgrades to Locomotive Fleet with GE Transportation

GE Transportation and PT Kereta Api (PTKA), Indonesia’s state-controlled railway, announced today that PTKA has confirmed an order for 20 C20-EMP locomotives with deliveries scheduled for 2010 and 2011. The Companies have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that commits the parties to developing a long-term plan for the purchase or lease of up to 150 additional locomotives that will be specifically designed for Indonesia.

The locomotive order is the largest in Indonesia’s history. The nation has more than 175 GE locomotives currently in operation, including some that have been successfully operating for more than 32 years.

The number of train passengers increases every year in Indonesia and the need for safe, reliable locomotives has become increasingly important. PTKA has improved its services through a number of initiatives, including upgrades of capital equipment. A signing ceremony was held at PTKA’s head office in Bandung, Indonesia, with PTKA President Director Ignasius Jonan and GE Transportation President and CEO Lorenzo Simonelli.

“PTKA is committed to improving its service and also the safety, comfort, and punctuality of its train operation. Our fleet rejuvenation is part of our commitment to improving service for our customers,” said PTKA President Director Ignasius Jonan.

The 20 locomotive kits will be built at GE Transportation’s state of the art locomotive manufacturing facility in Erie, Pa., USA, and final assembly will be completed by PT INKA, an Indonesian manufacturing company with locomotive assembly expertise.

“GE Transportation has had a long partnership with Indonesia and has provided reliable locomotives to the country for decades. This agreement will strengthen economic growth in Indonesia while continuing to grow GE Transportation’s international locomotive footprint,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, President and CEO of GE Transportation. “We are honored to have been selected for this important project and look forward to working with PTKA.”

The proposed C20-EMPs will feature GE’s 2,000-plus horsepower engine, manufactured in Grove City, Pa., and the Brightstar™ control system.

Approximately 17,000 GE locomotives are in use in more than 50 countries around the world.
