Profit Taking Weighs Down Markets

Profit taking amidst concerns over the faltering European economy weighed the markets down to a lower close with the Dow falling 47 points to 10,788. Nasdaq lost 7 points to 2368.

On the upside

Education Management (Nasdaq: EDMC) submitted two letters to the Senate Committee that is conducting a hearing on for-profit educators to clarify the testimony of one of its employees about the company's career placement services.

Jefferies analyst Jesse Pichel lifted his earnings estimate for Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE) and affirmed his Buy rating on the photovoltaic products company.

Molycorp (NYSE: MCP) named Stan Trout, Ph.D. to the position of Director of Magnet Manufacturing.

On the downside

LodgeNet Interactive (Nasdaq: LNET) withdrew its proposed senior secured notes offering saying that the pricing terms were unacceptable.

Omnova Solutions (NYSE: OMN) disappointed with lower third quarter earnings due to one time charges.

Analysts do not expect Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) to be acquired in the near future.

In the broad market, advancing issues were on par with decliners on the NYSE while decliners barely edged out advancers by slim margin on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks eased a point to 676.
