Smiths Detection Inc. Addresses Fentanyl Crisis with Roundtable Seminars on Exposure Prevention at ASIS International

Smiths Detection Inc. (SDI) expert Dr. Michael Frunzi will moderate a series of special roundtable seminars at ASIS International on Preventing Exposure to Illicit Fentanyl: Why Knowledge Through Technology is Critical.

The 2017 ASIS International Conference will take place in Dallas, Texas, from September 26th to September 28th. The seminar will run four times: at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM on both Tuesday, September 26, and Wednesday, September 27, in Smiths Detection’s booth #1415 and is open to all attendees.

The roundtable seminar will focus on the danger that fentanyl poses to security personnel and emergency responders and how detectors and identifiers can be used to mitigate risks. Variations of fentanyl such as carfentanil are 10,000 times more potent than morphine and can cause respiratory arrest in those who breathe trace particles of the narcotic. The seminar will also discuss techniques for efficiently collecting, processing, and preserving evidence during analysis.

Neil Sandhoff, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at SDI, said, “Smiths Detection is committed to providing solutions to help safeguard security personnel and emergency responders against lethal fentanyl exposure. We provide the technology, education, and resources to help public safety professionals make the best decisions using the most accurate information in the field.”

SDI’s technologies were recently adapted to detect and identify fentanyl and several of its analogues. These products include:

  • IONSCAN 600, a portable IMS system that detects trace amounts of narcotics including fentanyl and explosives in seconds
  • Target-ID and HazMatID Elite, FTIR handheld identifiers which perform chemical analysis on visible amounts of solids and liquids
  • ACE-ID, a Raman identifier that uses a laser to test bulk quantities of unknown substances without contact, even through semi-translucent containers

SDI offers customers access to the ReachBackID 24/7/365 hotline, which gives responders using SDI technologies access to Ph.D. scientists to support the field-based analysis of chemicals including fentanyl and several of its analogues. SDI also supports customers in obtaining grants through their partnership with PoliceGrantsHelp.com.
