Rivada Wins Patent Approval for LTE Mobility Management Innovation

Rivada Networks today announced its third major patent win this month. Rivada’s latest patent allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office covers Rivada’s method for moving wireless subscribers on and off leased spectrum based on the user’s physical location.

Rivada’s patented Dynamic Spectrum Arbitrage allows wholesale buyers to purchase wireless network capacity in narrowly defined units of space and time. Thus, a wireless carrier—or any other company interested in making bandwidth available to its customers—can purchase network access for a specific neighborhood, region, or even a single city block, for a specific period of time. This technology facilitates far more efficient and effective allocation of wireless capacity, a scarce resource that is in ever-growing demand as consumers increasingly rely on smart phones and other wireless devices to remain connected to the Internet.

Rivada’s newest patent allowance assists this dynamic allocation of network resources by combining lease information with data on subscribers’ physical location relative to the lease area. This permits the network to automatically pass subscribers into the leased network when they are in the territory leased through Rivada’s patented Telecommunications Commodity Exchange platform. They are then handed back to their home network seamlessly when they leave the leased area, all without any intervention on the subscribers’ part. Rivada’s mobility management moves the subscribers between networks using standards-based network-directed handovers.

“These network-driven handovers allow the leasing company to ensure that their subscribers use the leased network capacity at the appropriate time and place,” Rivada CTO Clint Smith said. “Rivada’s technology controls the decision to move a user on or off the home network, without the subscriber even needing to be aware that anything has changed.”

Rivada CEO Declan Ganley said: “As demand for wireless services continues to grow, intelligent and dynamic network management will become essential to efficient use of spectrum resources.” Ganley added: “Rivada’s latest patent win shows how far ahead of the competition we are in developing the future of dynamic wireless network management.”

About Rivada Networks

Rivada Networks is a leading designer, integrator and operator of wireless, interoperable communications networks. Rivada’s technology, Dynamic Spectrum Arbitrage-Tiered Priority Access (DSATPA), allows wireless broadband capacity to be dynamically bought and sold in a fully competitive on demand process to competing commercial entities. DSATPA is a game changer for the way in which spectrum is consumed, maximizing the efficiency of radio spectrum bandwidth and unlocking the potential for more extensive, higher capacity broadband networks.
