Southwestern College Welcomes Largest Incoming Class of Art Therapy/Counseling Students

Santa Fe, NM,, USA - - October 23, 2014

Southwestern College is focused on specific disciplines in the helping professions. By offering only Master’s Degrees in Counseling or Art Therapy/Counseling they are able to ensure that students receive the experiential education that has set the school apart from sister schools. This concentration, combined with the growing national reputation of the school, has resulted in the largest incoming class of Art Therapy/Counseling students to date.

“We’re thrilled to welcome new students each year. They bring with them their own unique life experiences which helps to enrich the lives and educations of all our students,” begins Dr. Jim Nolan, President of Southwestern College. “But there is extra excitement for these milestone classes, especially with the great range of diversity we are bringing in.”

The school, which is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is the only college in the state to offer an Art Therapy program, and it is approved by the Art Therapy Association. However, Southwestern College is known for attracting students from across the United States. Southwestern offers what Chairperson Deborah Schroder calls “Soul-Based Art Therapy”, with a heavy focus on art-making, and unusual opportunities like vision quests and training in earth-based healing traditions.

“It is fantastic to see, year after year, the influx of students from across the country,” concludes Nolan. “When we have these strong enrollment numbers it reminds us how important it is for students to get the type of education that we offer. And after all, it is the land that attracted the likes of Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams.”

Now in its 35th year, Southwestern College’s motto is Transforming Consciousness through Education. It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for experiential and transformational learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also afforded opportunities for deeply meaningful interaction and sharing.
