Have you ever walked into a room in your home or even entered your home after a hard day’s work to be met with total chaos? Does it totally overwhelm you just thinking about attacking this monster that has overtaken your life? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?

Tonia Tomlin, professional organizer understands your dilemma. As a mom of twins, and the author of Chaos to Calm she recognizes how quickly life can get out of control and that direction and organization are key to a peaceful and comforting environment.

Sorted Out Professional Organizing was born to fill the need that so many busy families and business owners are facing today. When I asked Tomlin what service she provides, her answer was, “I help my clients organize their homes and businesses by designing systems that create order. By doing this, we are saving them time and money as well as creating peace of mind.”

One of the most common problems that her clients face is dealing with paperwork either in the home or in their business. Tonia begins by implementing a paper management system tailored to the client’s needs. They also work to find functional solutions in a particular part of the home or business to make it easier for the client to manage. “We not only help our clients organize, but we also help them create new habits. We design programs specific to our clients’ lifestyle and work to teach them how to create new habits,” says Tomlin. She also believes that organization can be learned. It takes time and effort, just as anything worthwhile doing does.

Why do people hesitate calling in an organizer? They are embarrassed by their disorganization and they think that they are alone in their turmoil when in fact; it is a problem that is intensified because of the clutter.  The Princeton University Neuroscience Institute published a study in the January 2011 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. To paraphrase, the study found that chaos restricts your ability to focus. Disorder also limits your brain’s ability to process information as well as you would in an organized and calm setting. Working parents, women who over-commit to volunteering in their children’s schools or communities are vulnerable to falling into the chaos trap.

People who tend to be disorganized have great personality traits though.

They tend to be:

  • Very intelligent or gifted
  • Especially creative
  • Have a wide range of interests
  • Inclined to be perfectionists

These are just a few characteristics of people who may live a chaotic life.

Tonia offers a few tips for reducing stress through time management.

  • Organize your schedule a month in advance and stick to it
  • Avoid schedule overload – know your time limits
  • Give yourself a day to catch up after traveling
  • Schedule “me” time. Time away from home or work (even if for only an evening) will renew and restore your spirit
  • Add 2-3 hours a day by working from a list. You will be amazed at the increase in your productivity
  • Avoid computer distractions. Set aside a particular time of day to check emails and STICK TO IT.
  • Avoid distractions by setting boundaries. A “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door of your office lets others know that you are busy.

Try these few tips to effectively manage your time. After all, time is the only commodity that can never be replaced.
