HAMPTON, Va. and MILWAUKEE, June 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Adaptive Display Solutions recently helped the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) launch the new generation of traffic information signs. VDOT was in need of self-contained Travel Time Signs. Adaptive provided the 8700 Series 9 Rows x 18 Columns signs that could house the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) controller, redundant power supplies, and wireless communication modem with easy access from the front of the sign for servicing.

The installation of the six electronic road signs was part of Virginia's "Reach the Beach" project in the Hampton Roads area. The signs provide up-to-date travel times for those going to and from the beach.

The 'Reach the Beach' initiative will help VDOT improve the overall traveler experience by providing updated travel times at key decision points approaching and leaving the beach, said Gov. Bob McDonnell in a statement. This system will help travelers by providing them with the most reliable travel time information available and where possible, encourage them to use alternate routes that are less congested."

Iteris/Delcan partnered with VDOT and purchased the signs from Adaptive.  This installation is currently the first in Hampton Roads Virginia. The project took approximately three weeks to complete installing the signs and setting up the communications and commissioning.

VDOT and Iteris will be looking for more installations in the near future.
