PR Log - Jun 04, 2012 - Tacoma, WA – Tacoma’s family-owned Associated Petroleum Products (APP) has contributed $7,500 to become a major business member of Citizens for a Healthy Bay, a local non-profit organization that has worked for 22 years to clean up, restore and protect Commencement Bay and surrounding waters.
APP, long a supporter of groups such as, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, Nativity House, Emergency Food Network and other local non-profits, wanted to invest in local efforts to protect the environment. Company officials looked into CHB’s work in providing citizen oversight for Tacoma’s Superfund cleanup projects, restoring acres of natural habitat, patrolling the bay to stop pollution and monitoring compliance with stormwater regulations. APP saw a direct connection between CHB’s activities and its own efforts to reduce its environmental impact by installing a state-of-the-art stormwater treatment system, establishing a comprehensive recycling program and reducing its energy consumption by investing in new, efficient lighting in its facilities.
When CHB staff members visited APP’s headquarters in March to conduct an environmental assessment through CHB’s Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tacoma-Pierce County (BEST) program, (http://www.healthybay.org/index.php?option=com_content&vi...) it became apparent that the company and the non-profit group shared common goals and the relationship grew from there.
“When we toured APP’s facilities, we were very impressed with the company’s conservation and pollution prevention practices”, commented Bill Anderson, CHB’s Executive Director, adding, “The investments they’ve made to recycle all kinds of materials and protect against stormwater pollution set a great example for all of our local businesses. We’re very proud to have APP as a major business member – we know how much they care about the Bay and protecting the environment,” Anderson stated.
APP Partners, Luke Xitco, President/CEO and Frank Pupo, Jr., Executive VP/COO were equally impressed with CHB’s history of success in clean-up and restoration projects along with active involvement within the community to educate citizens and businesses in how to be better stewards to an important natural resource. “We liked the way CHB ran their organization” stated Luke Xitco, “their focus is to actively involve the community in the restoration of Commencement Bay and surrounding waters instead of finding fault with area businesses.” Frank Pupo, Jr. added “They work with you to help improve your environmental performance which in the long run increases your profitability. I’m surprised there aren’t more businesses taking advantage of the BEST program”.
